What you need before you start

  • Your name, date of birth and contact details as your bank has them.
  • An identity document number, such as your PAN.
  • A mobile number and email address you can use to verify your identity.

If you are new to CIBIL

  1. Go to www.cibil.com and open the page for the free CIBIL score and report.
  2. Start the enrolment and enter the details requested.
  3. Complete the identity check. CIBIL has to be sure the report goes to the person it describes.
  4. Once verified, open your dashboard to see the score and download the report.

If the online identity check fails, CIBIL asks you to call its customer support to finish verification.

If you already have a myCIBIL account

  1. Log in to myCIBIL.
  2. Open the My Account tab.
  3. Click Get your Free Report.

The link is available once a year. If you have a paid plan, the free link appears again after the plan ends.

Go to the bureau itself

Other apps and websites also offer credit scores. Before using one, check what personal data and permissions it asks for. The free annual report required by the RBI comes from the credit bureau's own website, and you do not have to give your data to anyone else to get it.

Why it is free: the RBI rule

This is a right, not a promotion. On 1 September 2016 the Reserve Bank of India directed all credit information companies to provide "one free full credit report (FFCR) including credit score, once in a year" to any individual whose credit history they hold. The rule took effect on 1 January 2017. The report must be given in electronic form, on request, once the person's identity has been verified.

The rule covers every credit information company licensed in India, not CIBIL alone. Each of them owes you one free report a year, so you can check your record with all of them.

Free report or paid plan?

The free report is the same full report, with the score. What you pay for with a subscription is frequency: CIBIL's paid plans let you see an updated score and report again before a year has passed.

In our view most people do not need that. A paid plan is worth considering when you are about to apply for a large loan and want to watch your report closely for a few months.

Read the report, not only the score

The three-digit score gets the attention, but the report behind it is what you can act on. Go through it for:

  • loans or credit cards you do not recognise
  • accounts you have closed that still show as open
  • payments marked late that you made on time
  • wrong personal details, such as an old address or a misspelt name

CIBIL's own guidance is that banks check your score before approving credit and that you should aim to keep it above 750.

How to fix an error

  1. Log in to myCIBIL and open the online dispute form.
  2. Select what is wrong. One form can cover several fields across your personal details, contact details, employment, accounts and enquiries.
  3. Submit the dispute. CIBIL marks the item as under dispute and asks the lender to check it.
  4. Wait for the outcome. CIBIL says resolution takes about 30 days, depending on how quickly the lender responds.

CIBIL checks a disputed entry with the lender that reported it, which is why the time taken depends on the lender. If a loan on your report is not yours at all, contact that lender directly as well.

About these steps

The steps follow the official guidance listed under Sources, which we read on 11 October 2026. Government and bank websites change their menus from time to time. If a button or menu has a different name when you try, look for the nearest match and check the official page.

Frequently asked questions

Is checking my CIBIL score really free?

Yes, once a year. The RBI requires each credit information company to give every individual one free full credit report, including the score, each calendar year.

How many times can I check my CIBIL score for free?

Once a year from CIBIL. The same rule applies to each of the other credit bureaus, so you can get one free report a year from each.

What is a good CIBIL score?

CIBIL advises keeping your score above 750, because banks check it before approving credit.

How do I correct a mistake in my CIBIL report?

Submit an online dispute through myCIBIL. The item is marked as under dispute while the lender checks it, and resolution takes about 30 days.

Do I have to buy a subscription to see my score?

No. The free annual report includes the score. Paid plans only let you see it more often.
