What you need before you start
- The mobile number registered with your FASTag.
- The name of the bank or company that issued the tag.
- Your vehicle registration number.
Method 1: your issuer's app or website
A FASTag is a prepaid account held with the bank or payment company that issued it, so that issuer has the exact balance.
- Open the issuer's mobile app or FASTag web portal.
- Log in with your registered mobile number or customer ID.
- Open the FASTag or wallet section to see the balance and recent toll transactions.
- Recharge from the same screen if the balance is low.
Method 2: the My FASTag app
This is the official app from IHMCL, the company promoted by the National Highways Authority of India to run the FASTag programme.
- Install the My FASTag app and open it.
- Enter your vehicle number to check the tag's status.
- Read the colour: green means the tag is active with enough balance, orange means the balance is low, and red means the tag is blacklisted.
You can also recharge through the app using UPI.
Method 3: SMS alerts
- Look for the SMS sent to your registered mobile after your last toll payment.
- It shows the amount deducted.
- If you receive no SMS after a toll, check that your current mobile number is registered with the issuer.
Method 4: missed call, for NHAI prepaid wallets
This service is only for tags linked to the NHAI prepaid wallet. It will not work for a tag issued by a bank.
- From your registered mobile, give a missed call to +91-8884333331.
- The service is toll free and runs round the clock.
- You receive an SMS with your wallet balance.
Why the balance matters
A tag without enough money in it gets blacklisted by the issuer, and a blacklisted tag cannot pay a toll. A vehicle that enters a FASTag lane without a valid tag is charged double the toll, in cash.
You can add as little as ₹1 at a time. Tags linked directly to a bank account can top themselves up automatically when the balance falls below a set level.
If something looks wrong
- A toll was deducted twice or for the wrong vehicle class. Contact your issuer's customer care within 40 days of the transaction. A refund through the bank can take 20 to 30 working days.
- The app shows red. The tag is blacklisted. The usual cause is low balance, so recharge first. A tag can also be blacklisted for the wrong vehicle class or for not being fixed to the windscreen.
- You are asked to update KYC. Complete it with your issuer. For NHAI tags the address is fastag.ihmcl.com. Processing takes up to seven working days.
- You need help on the highway. The national highways helpline is 1033.
