From Redditch to Chennai
Royal Enfield's story is unusual because the licensee outlived the original. The English company designed the Bullet and built it from 1932. In 1955 it partnered with Madras Motors to assemble the 350cc Bullet in India, and sold the factory tooling to the Indian venture, Enfield India.
The English company stopped trading in 1971. The Indian one kept building the same motorcycle. That unbroken run, first in England and then in India, is why Royal Enfield is described as the oldest motorcycle brand in continuous production.
