Three countries, one badge
MG is one of the clearer examples of how a car brand's nationality can split three ways. The marque is British in origin. Its owner is Chinese: SAIC Motor, a state-owned manufacturer in Shanghai, sells cars under the MG name around the world. And the company that builds and sells MG cars in India is now majority Indian-owned.
Who owns MG Motor India
SAIC set up the Indian business in 2017 and owned all of it at first. In 2023 it cut its shareholding, and by November of that year it had entered a joint venture with the Mumbai-based JSW Group. The resulting ownership is:
| Shareholder | Stake |
|---|---|
| SAIC Motor (China) | 49% |
| JSW Group (India) | 35% |
| IndoEdge India Fund | 8% |
| Employee stock ownership plan | 5% |
| Dealer trust | 3% |
SAIC remains the largest single shareholder, but it no longer holds a majority. The Indian shareholders together own 51%. The company took the JSW name in 2024.
Where MG cars are made in India
JSW MG Motor India has one manufacturing plant, at Halol in Gujarat. The plant used to belong to General Motors India and can build 80,000 vehicles a year. MG began production and sales there in 2019.
