A British company with an Indian parent
Ownership and nationality are easy to confuse here. Jaguar Land Rover is registered in the United Kingdom, has its headquarters in Coventry, and is one of the largest employers in the British car industry, with about 33,000 staff. Its two marques have always been British.
The shareholder is Indian. Tata Motors, part of the Tata Group, created Jaguar Land Rover in January 2008 as a holding company to buy Jaguar Cars and Land Rover from Ford, and has owned all of it since.
Where Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles fits in
Tata Motors has since been split in two. In March 2024 it announced a demerger, which took effect on 1 October 2025. The original company kept the passenger car business and Jaguar Land Rover and was renamed Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles. The commercial vehicle business became a separate listed company, which took over the Tata Motors name.
Both appear in the current list of India's largest listed companies. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, the owner of Jaguar Land Rover, had an average market capitalisation of ₹1.31 lakh crore between January and June 2026, which made it the 79th most valuable listed company in India.
Before Tata: Ford, BMW and British Leyland
Jaguar and Land Rover had separate histories for decades. They were first brought under one roof in 1968 as part of British Leyland, and were later split up again. Ford bought Jaguar in 1989. Land Rover went to BMW, which sold it to Ford in 2000. Ford then sold both together to Tata Motors in 2008.
