Who owns BigBasket
Tata Digital is the majority shareholder. It is the Tata Group's company for consumer internet businesses, and it bought 64% of BigBasket in May 2021 in a deal that valued the grocer at around US$1.85 billion. Tata Digital also took part in a US$200 million funding round in January 2023, which valued BigBasket at US$3.2 billion.
Because Tata Digital is itself Indian, BigBasket is Indian in every sense that people usually mean: founded in India, run from India, and controlled by an Indian group.
The founders
BigBasket was started in December 2011 by V. S. Sudhakar, Hari Menon, V. S. Ramesh, Vipul Parekh and Abhinay Choudhari, a team that had worked on internet businesses since the dot-com years. Hari Menon led it as chief executive until June 2026, when he stepped down and Amit Nanda, previously a director at Amazon India, took over. Menon remains on the board.
What BigBasket does
BigBasket sells groceries and household goods online and delivers them to homes. It began with scheduled deliveries and has added quick delivery.
